Brian Skillen: Memories of my time operating LEO I

I worked on LEO 1 from 1960 to 1964 before I moved to working on LEO II/1 and LEO III/7. Peter Bird was my boss for a number of years. Before Peter, I was hired by Peter Wood and worked on LEO I under Norman Beasley from 1960 to 1964. As you may know, there was a small display at the Science Museum in London and, at one time, they displayed a photo of me squaring up a handful of cards on one of the peripherals. One of the last additions to LEO I was the installation of the Order Display panel that can be seen on the later photos. It was a great help to the operator in knowing what was happening. A frequent display was when LEO was "howling" - normally wanting more cards to be loaded. The operator was able to look at the display and go straight to the peripheral and load more cards.
